Hay List burns Healy Stakes rivals

Trainer John McNair was almost scared to talk about his future with exciting sprinter Hay List after watching the former Perth star destroy his rivals in the $175,000 W.J. Healy Stakes (at Eagle Farm today

Hay List only joined the McNair stable on the NSW central coast early this year and was having only his second start for the former Perth trainer.

Ridden by Chris Munce, Hay List burnt across the face of field to lead and from there kept running to open a big break on the field at the 200m.

His explosive acceleration left a field of talented sprinters standing with the winning margin stretching out to five lengths.

Munce eased him down in the last 50 metres but he still stopped the clock at a brilliant 1.08.69 for the 1200m with his last 600m a scintillating 33.63 seconds.

Munce was stunned by the performance.

“He is unbelievable, I have been lucky enough to ride some good sprinters in my time and he is right there with them, don't worry about that,” Munce said.

“I just gave him a bit of a click up and away he went, he just took off.

“They had no hope of running him down.”

McNair tried to keep a lid on what may lie ahead for Hay List but it was obvious he expects him to be winning in Group One company next season.

”I think he's pretty special. He has amazing acceleration, that is his real feature, plus his high cruising speed,” McNair said.

”We'll give him two or three weeks off now and work on his feet to get them 100 percent,” McNair said.

“He will probably have his next start in either the Missile Stakes in Sydney or a race in Melbourne.

“I think he is a pretty special horse and by next January, while I will still have my other horses, I think I will be devoting my time to him 24/7,” McNair said.

After winning eight of his first nine starts in Western Australia, Hay List opened the new phase of his career with a fighting second to the classy Sydney three-year-old Love Conquers All in the June Stakes at Randwick on June 5.

McNair then planned to start Hay List in the Takeover Target Stakes at Gosford last Wednesday but heavy rain forced him to bypass that race and look north to the Healy Stakes for a drier track.

He was sent north by road on Thursday but did not travel well and gave McNair an anxious 24 hours before he gave the go ahead for a start in the Group 3 sprint.

Part-owner Liz Davenport, the renowned fashion designer, said Hay List had to be sent to NSW from Perth because of his obvious talent.

“It was his best win, fantastic,” Davenport said.

“To bring him all that way and put him through so much, a new trainer, opposite direction and he came out and blitzed the field like that... what a horse!”
