Melito may do it all again

Rosehill trainer Gerald Ryan is looking to repeat a stellar autumn/winter campaign for top filly Melito next season.

Ryan was delighted for the honest filly to have broken through for an overdue Brisbane Group 1 win with her dogged success in the Winter Stakes at Eagle Farm on Saturday.

But she hasn't even gone to the paddock and he is mapping out a program similar to this campaign taking in feature Group 1 races in both Sydney and Brisbane in 12 months time.

For that reason Ryan will restrict the filly's spring campaign to just two runs.

“She'll head back to Rosehill today and will be in the paddock by Wednesday,” Ryan said.

“She'll have a minimum of four weeks but won't come back until she's ready to come back.

“She'll probably have just two runs, either the Schillaci or Moir (Schweppes) Stakes then the Patinack Classic at the end of the carnival.

“Then there's no reason she can't come back in the autumn and run in all those races again.”

Ryan has penciled in either the Group 2 Schillaci Stakes (1000m) at Caulfield or Group 2 Schweppes Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley as a starting point then the Group 1 Patinack Farm Classic at the end of Cup week at Flemington.

She would then spell again and be aimed at the Group 1 feature races at next year's Sydney autumn carnival and Brisbane's winter carnival.

This campaign, Melito raced seven times, the last six in Group 1 grade, for two wins (Winter Stakes, T.J. Smith Stakes) and five placings.
