The fallout following Jason Maskiell’s sacking from the Mick Price stable has continued after Racing Victoria barred the jockey from participating in an international apprentice riders' series.

Price asked Maskiell to find another master after he became dissatisified with the 19-year-old's drinking habits and nocturnal lifestyle which the trainer said would stop Maskiell from reaching his full potential.

Maskiell and fellow Victorian Billy Egan were selected to represent Australia in the Asian Young Guns Challenge against the region’s best young jockeys.

The former Tasmanian hoop was scheduled to take on apprentices from Hong Kong, Japan and Malaysia as well as the host nation in a series of races to be run at Kranji Racecourse on July 18.

A disappointed Maskiell said RVL’s jockey and welfare co-ordinator Ron Hall told him he would not be allowed to ride in the series.
“I haven’t been told too much but Ron told me it was because of what happened last week with Mick (Price),” Maskiell said.

“It’s extremely disappointing but I can’t do much about it. I thought I would have been okay because the problem is between myself and Mick but the trip is not going to happen.”

Hall said the decision to ban Maskiell from the Asian Young Guns Challenge “came from higher up than me” but confirmed the rider has been stopped from competing in the series.

“The decision was made by a panel from the integrity department of RVL,” Hall said. “It was made because of Jason’s current circumstances and the circumstances surrounding his departure from the Price stable.”

Hall said Maskiell’s replacement in the series was yet to be decided but would come from the Victorian apprentice ranks.

Racing Victoria chairman of stewards, Terry Bailey, is on leave and was unavailable for comment.
