Rebel set for Ramornie start

Tamworth sprint star Border Rebel will be an acceptor for Wednesday's $130,000 WHK Ramornie Handicap at Grafton but will only start if trainer Sue Grills is happy with his barrier draw.

Grills has bowed the wishes of Border Rebel's owner Veronica Scott-Mason, who wants to see her brilliant performer race in the Ramornie under the topweight of 60kg.

Grills was not keen on a start because of the big weight but has met Scott-Mason, herself a former successful trainer in Africa, half way by agreeing to declare the gelding as a final acceptor today.

"He will probably run, depending on the barrier draw," Grills said.

"If he draws outside 10 we will hve a rethink.

"Even though he has won 12 from 16, he has never won a Group race yet he is rated like a Group horse and I think he has been weighted above his best.

Border Rebel had a fast gallop at Tamworth on Friday and Grills said the four-year-old had done well since his last start win in the Takeover Target Stakes at Gosford.

With Border Rebel's regular rider Tim Bell under suspension Grills has booked Grafton's Ben Looker to ride the sprinter.

"Ben's had the one ride on him for a win at Canterbury last year," Grills said.

Grills will also start Ollie Vollie in the Ramornie with Greg Ryan to ride.

The rising eight-year-old landed his 13th career win when he won the John Carlton Cup over the Ramornie course and distance last Thursday and will drop 7kg in weight

"Ollie Vollie ran fifth in the Ramornie last year and he's going better this year,” Grills said.

The Ramornie field will include dual winner The Jackal (Robert Thompson), Pinwheel (Danny Nikolic) and Kenny's World (Blake Shinn).

Pinwheel was runner-up to Hay List in the Group 3 Healy Stakes at Eagle Farm at his latest start and that form was underlined last Saturday when Bold Glance won the Ascot Handicap at Eagle Farm.

Bold Glance was nine lengths astern of Hay List and four lengths behind Pinwheel in the Healy Stakes.
